Jimmy Cobb, the last surviving member of Miles’ classic “Kind of Blue” band, also was integral to bands led by Cannonball and Nat Adderley, and later to Nat’s own groups. He had the most potent ride cymbal in jazz.
I experienced that gift up close and in person when I had the opportunity to play a full concert with Cobb and other former Nat Adderley sidemen at the memorial concert for the cornetist at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, where Nat had been an artist in residence.
Some years later, I interviewed Cobb for a JazzTimes piece on finding the right cymbals. In addition to being a great drummer and all-around creative musician, he struck me as kindhearted and generous. RIP.
